Mar Ephrem Nariculam, Bishop of Chanda Diocese

Mar Ephrem Nariculam was born on 10 December 1960 at Nayarambalam in the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly as the son of Late Thomas and Late Thresia Nariculam. Having completed his school education at St. George Vadel and Bhagavathivilasam School, Nayarambalam, Fr. Ephrem joined the Minor Seminary of the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly. He completed his Philosophical studies in Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamally and Theological studies in St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalapuram. He was ordained priest by Cardinal Antony Padiyara on 27 December 1986. After ordination he served as Assistant Parish priest in Kanjoor, Koratty and Ernakulam Basilica and as Assistant Chaplain in the Delhi Syro-Malabar Mission and later as Rector of the Minor Seminary of Chanda. He secured B.A. in English Literature from Kerala University, B.Th. from the Urban University, Rome and Masters in Inter-religious Dialogue from Vidya Jyothi, Delhi and Doctorate in Theology from the Indian Institute of Spirituality, Bangalore. Fr. Ephrem was a visiting professor in the Major Seminaries of Nagpur and Vadavathoor and from 2007 onwards he was serving as Professor in the St. Augustine’s Faculty of Theology of Toronto University, Canada where he received his appointment as Bishop of Chanda. He is also serving as the spiritual father, priestly formation coordinator of the seminarians as well as Chaplain of the Permanent Deacons’ Theology Programme in St. Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto, Canada. For brief period he has also served as parish priest in the Syro-Malabar parish in Toronto. In 2000, he took a diploma in priestly formation from the Regina Apostolorum University, Rome. He has conducted many retreats in English and Malayalam in many parishes in Canada and the US. He has published some articles in English and has been a constant contributor to Ephatha, the publication of Toronto Syro-Malabar Parish. Fr. Antony Nariculam, Rector, Pontifical Seminary, Mangalapuzha and Sr. Sherly SMI who is working in Guwahathi, Kochutheresia, Poulose, Josukutty, Marykunju, Aathappan, Kunjumol, Elsamma are his siblings. Two of his siblings, Alice and Vakkachan passed away a few years ago.

KOCHI: Fr Ephrem Nariculam, a native of Nayarambalam, has been appointed bishop of the Diocese of Chanda in Maharashtra.
Since 2007, Fr Ephrem has been serving as a professor at the St Augustine’s Faculty of Theology at the Toronto University, Canada.
The announcement of the appointment was made at Vatican; at the Major Archiepiscopal Curia, Mount St Thomas, Kakkanad; and the Bishop’s House at Chanda at the same time on Thursday.
The appointment follows the acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Vijay Anand Nedumpuram CMI, the present Bishop of Chanda, at the age of 75. The bishop-elect is son of the late Thomas and late Thresia Nariculam of Nayarambalam, under the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly. He was born on December 10, 1960.
He completed his philosophical studies at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamally, and theological studies at the St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore.
He was ordained a priest by Cardinal Antony Padiyara on December 27, 1986. Then, Fr Ephrem served as assistant parish priest at the Kanjoor, Koratty and Ernakulam basilicas, and as assistant chaplain at the Delhi Syro-Malabar Mission. Later, he served as rector of the Minor Seminary of Chanda.
He secured BA in English Literature from Kerala University, BTh from Urban University, Rome, and Masters in Inter-religious Dialogue from the Vidya Jyothi, Delhi.
He was awarded Doctorate in Theology by the Indian Institute of Spirituality, Bangalore. He also served as a visiting professor at the major seminaries of Nagpur and Vadavathoor. The diocese of Chanda comprises the civil districts various districts in Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Archbishop of Bangalore Bernard Moras appointed Fr Mathew Koikkara CMI as the episcopal vicar for the Syro-Malabar Faithful at the Archdiocese of Bangalore. Fr Koikkara is currently serving as a member of the College of Consultors to the Archbishop of Bangalore. He is the son of the late Joseph Koikkara and Thressiamma Joseph of Olanadu. He joined the CMI congregation in 1967 and was ordained priest in 1979. He has served as vicar of the St Thomas Forane Parish Dharmaram, Bangalore. Later, Fr Mathew was elected dean of the St Thomas Deanery Bangalore.
